The increasing demand for care requires innovation in the Netherlands
The population is aging, which will increase the demand for care and with that the costs will increase as well. The situation in the Netherlands is such that the government draws back and more expenses will have to be paid by those in need of care themselves. As a result the customers of care get a bigger say in what their care will look like.
All care must be of high quality to withstand future demand and must be adaptable to the clients’ wishes and demands. Besides the demand for a professional healthcare system, the pressure on informal care is also increasing. Nursing home care and home care institutions must relate to this pressure and offer help to release this pressure in an innovative way.
The elderly want to live at home for as long as possible, supported by technology and care and on-demand service. This development plays both in the short and the long term. This requires service-oriented companies that organize care as close as possible. This will lead to higher costs.
Sustainability and durability of care and care institutions are a must for those institutions to secure their future. The elderly who need to pay for themselves want a guaranteed sustainable solution for their future care. Sustainable building in health care means (among others) that the buildings can be set up in a flexible manner and adjusted to future needs.
Technological advancement can play a large role in securing the care giving to the elderly. Home automation and fall detection to name a couple can improve the life of the elderly and give them a safer home and a greater sense of security. To be able to stay in their own homes is the wish that most elderly have. By implementing new technology, and adjusting the home and care to the user’s wishes, this goal can be achieved for many.
The increasing demand on home and nursing home care in the coming years, will not only have effect on technological innovations, but will also demand an increase in demand for qualified and caring employees. Standard care as it is organized now,a will no longer meet de demands and more personal involvement will be the new standard.
With less involvement from the government, the importance of informal caregivers (family, neighbors and volunteers) increases. Unburdening these caregivers creates new possibilities for all (home)care institutions and housing companies.
To be able to deliver high quality care, with qualified personnel will be the challenge of the coming years. The shortage of trained employees and high pressure on the job as well as small budgets asks for innovation and creative solutions to be able to deliver all care that is needed now and in the future.
